👍 Avis de MONOVA: Museum of North Vancouver

Visiting MONOVA was a real treat, it completely exceeded expectations for a regional museum. The exhibits do an excellent job of weaving together the many layers of North Vancouver’s history: from its Indigenous roots with, through shipbuilding, industry, recreation and community life.

I also appreciated that MONOVA isn’t just about history on display, it actively honors Indigenous stories and communities.

For North Van's relatively small population, punches way above its weight with high-quality engaging exhibits. Full disclosure: I struggle with museums that are text-dense. Whether that's because of reading-related trauma or too many short form videos I'm not sure, but I absolutely cannot stand places where you just stare blankly at things behind glass and pretend to be interested.

Monova's galleries animate the past in a refreshing way, engaging the senses with sound and hands-on activities, while still maintaining depth, nuance, and the connection to the present. Kids love the interactive activities like playing with ship cargo blocks, and adults who are bored by old-fashioned museums will, too. One standout feature is the screen with the wheels you turn—each rotation moves the road, rail, sea, or trail networks through time, projected dynamically onto a map. This is an absolute masterwork of interactive storytelling, making it feel like history in your hands. Of course there's still text, but it's a pleasure to read and never feels like a textbook.

A nice bonus was being able to talk to the staff, who each have a wealth of stories about the city to share. Carson was awesome, telling about his lived experience in the city over the decades. It's fitting that a city known for being active engages with its past in an active way, and the experience changed my ideas about what a museum can be.

Our friends have invited us to visit this place, and it was a modern museum that told us a lot about North Vancouver’s history. We went on October 17, 2025, and I would definitely recommend checking out MONOVA.

Beautiful little museum, interesting place for both adults and children. We visited “Ghostly Galeries: Halloween torchlight scavenger hunt”, we loved it! So, we instantly bought yearly passes after that. Now we’re going back regularly. =)

Overall a fine experience, although might be a little overpriced. Most staff were very friendly and helpful, and there are kids sections offering their chances to explore.
However I can’t stop thinking about one of the staff/volunteer that made us feel unwelcome.
He ignored our greeting several times, and specifically cleaned up after my kids while they were still playing at the kids section, even after I said I will clean after them (which he totally ignored and did not reply again). They were not causing a scene or making noises, and this experience makes me hesitate when I think about bringing them there again.

Definitely not what I expected. It’s a very small museum with one big room full of displays that can be explored in under 30 minutes. Also, when I got there around 4pm, I was told they’d be closing at 5pm despite their advertised hours showing 8pm.
There’s a lot of cute related merch but overall, I wouldn’t recommend paying to visit this place as an adult. It’s best suited for kids with a very short attention span.

I LOVE how welcoming MONOVA is. From the multilingual “Welcome” signs outside, the receiving area where the trolley and gift shop are, your knowledgeable and friendly staff, to the mindful exhibits featured in the main area: I love it all!

Special shout-out to providing highlights of the Before and After of North Van Corner Stores, the Dementia exhibition, and of course, my favourite - the Jukebox machine! It was so fun learning the history in interactive ways.

Thank you!

This small museum is an absolutely amazing way to spend your weekend before the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation! Packed with indigenous and local history, this museum pairs visual and audio in many exhibits where you can learn how everybody shaped the way Vancouver is today.

The gift shop also has incredible beautiful jewelry and teacups/teapot/saucer sets that incorporate First Nations art. I picked one up, and a lady outside saw me through the window, stopped, stared, and then came in herself to peruse the shelves herself!

Thank you for a humbling experience and the education provided here. I stayed fairly close to an employee giving a student the full tour and curation of the museum, and WOW! What a wonderful experience they provide here!
